Chapter 16 – New York to Ohio
Its slow go through New York State because the thruway goes right through Buffalo and that is a real big city. The city has to be filled with changelings and radiation. So they take I-390 south into I-86 west. They change drivers every three to four hour to keep everyone fresh. The girls even get into the mix of driving. This includes Maureen and Amanda because they have their licenses and they know how to drive the bus. When they reach the Pennsylvania line they get back on I-90 west. The detour keeps them out of Buffalo but also lets Napoleon catch up an hour on them. They drive through the small portion of Pennsylvania and head into Ohio.
“Dad I am only 60 miles away from Cleveland, do you know a way around it?” Rachelle asks as she drives.
“Take I-271 south we will go around Cleveland.” Jay replies.
“One more thing we are just above a quarter in fuel.” Rachelle says.
“Ok we will stop somewhere around here.” Jay responds.
They pull into a truck stop just 40 miles east of Cleveland. It’s not to populated but there are quite a few changelings in the area. They pull in and the changelings are sluggish and moving slow. Jay and Jr get out of the bus at the fuel island and they have an axe and a serrated knife in hand. They want to kill the changelings as quietly as possible. Immediately three changelings are walking towards them. Two female and one male. They are walking like zombies now from the lack of food. They are rotting on their bones and the smell is horrendous.
“Food.” The first female changeling barely gets out.
Jay plants the axe in her head. The bone is so soft that her head splatters into slop as her body falls to the ground. Jr walks up the male with the knife and just stabs him under the jaw and into the brain. Killing the changeling instantaneously as it crumples to the ground. Jay walks over to the other female and one swat from the axe sends its head soaring through the air as her body falls to the ground. Jr starts to pump the diesel fuel while Jay stands guard. When they finish fueling everyone takes their turns using the bathroom to relieve themselves.
“How much longer?” Derrick asks.
“A couple more days’ son. We have to get through the heavy populated area very carefully and slowly. Once we hit Iowa and the Dakota’s we should be able to pick up speed.” Jay replies.
Once everyone is done using the restroom they start loading on the bus again. That’s when Rachelle notices that Amanda and Maureen are not with the group.
“Dad where are the girls?” Rachelle asks.
“We were all together when we started to use the restrooms.” Jay responds.
“They went into the convenience store. Amanda said something about her monthly friend came and she needed to get something.” Travis replies.
“Are you fucking kidding me? Jr come on and bring a gun.
